Patio and French Door Lock Repair and Installation | Newcastle
Patio doors and French doors are a common security weak point in homes across Newcastle and North Tyneside. Sliding patio doors in particular are frequently fitted with basic hook locks that provide minimal resistance, and French doors without multi-point locking and hinge bolts can be forced open relatively easily. Moorside Locksmiths repair, replace, and upgrade locks on patio and French doors across the region. Call us on 07968 567171.
SLIDING PATIO DOOR LOCKS
Standard sliding patio doors use a hook or claw lock that engages with a keep in the frame when the door is closed. These mechanisms wear over time and can eventually fail to engage reliably. Common issues include:

-
Hook mechanism worn or broken - door no longer locks securely
-
Door dropped on its rollers - locking points misaligned with keeps in the frame
-
Anti-lift device failed - door can be lifted off its track from outside
-
Lock cylinder worn or failing

We repair and replace patio door hook mechanisms, adjust doors on their rollers to restore alignment, and supply and fit anti-lift devices where missing.
FRENCH DOOR LOCKS
French doors - two hinged doors that meet in the centre - need locking at three points as a minimum: the centre where the doors meet, and top and bottom shoot bolts to engage with the frame. Common issues:

-
Central multi-point lock failing or stiff
-
Shoot bolts missing, broken, or not engaging with their keeps
-
Hinge bolts missing - without these, French doors can be removed from their hinges from outside
-
Cylinder worn or needing upgrade to anti-snap

We supply and fit French door multi-point locks, shoot bolts, and hinge bolts, and can upgrade cylinders to anti-snap where applicable.
WHY PATIO AND FRENCH DOORS ARE TARGETED
Large glazed door panels are sometimes seen as a liability, but the glass is rarely the first thing attacked - the lock is. A forced patio or French door lock takes seconds and creates much less noise than breaking glass. Ensuring the locks are in good condition and at the right specification is the most effective protection.
FAQs
My sliding patio door will not lock properly. Can you fix it?

Usually yes. The most common cause is a worn hook mechanism or a door that has dropped on its rollers and put the locking points out of alignment. We diagnose on site and carry common replacement parts.

Do French doors need shoot bolts as well as a central lock?

Yes. A central lock alone is not sufficient - French doors should also have top and bottom shoot bolts engaging with the frame, and hinge bolts to prevent the hinges being attacked from outside.

Can you upgrade the lock on my patio door?

Yes. We can replace worn or inadequate patio door mechanisms with higher specification locks and add anti-lift devices where they are missing.
