Anti-Snap Lock Installation in Newcastle and North Tyneside

Lock snapping is the most common method used by burglars to break into homes in the North East. A standard euro cylinder - the type fitted to most uPVC and composite doors-can be snapped in half using a pair of grips in under 30 seconds, giving immediate access to the property without triggering an alarm or leaving obvious signs of forced entry. If your front door has a standard euro cylinder, it is vulnerable. The fix is straightforward: an anti-snap cylinder fitted in place of your existing one. Moorside Locksmiths carry anti-snap cylinders as standard van stock and can fit one on the same day you call. Call us on 07968 56171.

WHAT IS LOCK SNAPPING?

Lock snapping exploits a design weakness in standard euro cylinders. The cylinder protrudes slightly beyond the face of the door furniture, and when enough rotational force is applied to that protruding section, the cylinder snaps at a weak point just inside the door. The inner section, which still contains the cam that operates the latch and deadbolt, can then be turned with a screwdriver and the door opens.

The technique requires no lockpicking skill, no specialist knowledge, and tools available in any hardware shop. It takes seconds. This is why it has become the dominant domestic burglary method across the UK, and particularly in the North East where uPVC housing is widespread.

WHAT AN ANTI-SNAP CYLINDER DOES

An anti-snap cylinder is engineered specifically to defeat this attack. It has a sacrificialsection at the outer end which, when snapped, breaks away cleanly from the working mechanism inside. The inner part of the cylinder - the section that actually operates your lock - remains intact and functional. The door stays locked.

Quality anti-snap cylinders also carry additional resistance ratings:

  • Anti-pick - pins designed to resist manipulation tools

  • Anti-drill - hardened steel inserts that defeat drill attacks

  • Anti-bump - designed to resist bump key attacks

We fit cylinders rated to TS007 3-star standard, which is the benchmark recommended by police crime prevention officers and required by many home insurers. All the cylinders we fit are from established brands including Chubb, Yale, UNION, and ASSA.

WHAT WE DO

We assess your existing cylinder size, supply the correct anti-snap replacement, fit it, and test it fully before we leave. In most cases the job takes under 30 minutes. We carry a range of sizes to cover the most common door types across Newcastle and North Tyneside, so the majority of anti-snap fitting jobs are completed on the first visit with no need to order parts.

If you have multiple external doors or want to check all entry points, we can assess the whole property in one visit and advise on what needs attention.

FAQs

How do I know if my lock is vulnerable to snapping?

If your front door has a euro cylinder-the oval-shaped lock with a keyhole in the centre, fitted to most uPVC and composite doors- and it protrudes beyond the face of the door handle surround, it is likely vulnerable. Call us and we can assess it.

Can I see whether my cylinder is anti-snap before calling?

Many cylinders are not clearly labelled. The safest way to check is to have us look at it. If the cylinder is standard, the visual difference from the outside is subtle.

Do anti-snap cylinders affect how my door works day to day?

No. An anti-snap cylinder operates identically to a standard one from your side of the door. You use the same key, turn it the same way, and the door works the same.

Will my insurer require an anti-snap cylinder?

Many home insurers now specify TS007-rated or BS3621-compliant locks as a condition of cover. Some are moving toward requiring 3-star anti-snap cylinders specifically. Check your policy wording or call us - we can advise on what your insurer is likely to accept.

How much does an anti-snap cylinder cost to fit in Newcastle?

Prices vary by cylindersize and specification. We give you the full price before we start. Call 07968 567171 for an estimate based on your door type.
